The California Department of Aging (CDA) administers programs that serve older adults, adults with disabilities, family caregivers, and residents in long-term care facilities throughout the State. These services are provided locally by contracted agencies. Often, the Ombudsman acts as a mediator, confidential counselor, and educator to help resolve issues to the resident’s satisfaction. The local Ombudsman is also an educational resource for long-term care staff. Program representatives offer training on residents’ rights, mandatory reporting procedures, and conflict resolution. An Ombudsman is a state-certified, trained volunteer advocate for residents who live in long-term care facilities such as nursing facilities and residential facilities for seniors.

Friday, March 26, 2010 Ombudsman Appreciation Day As elder law attorneys, many of us are already familiar with the Florida Long Term Care Ombudsman Program. As a quick summary: the ombudsman program is funded through the Department of Elder Affairs and its purpose is to be an advocate for the health, safety, welfare and rights of residents in adult family care homes, assisted living facilities and nursing homes. After an external search, California State University Long Beach converted its Interim Ombuds Keith Freesemann to a permanent position.Freesemann has held the position since January 2016, following the retirement of the prior University Ombuds, Betsy Decyk. Freesemann has worked at CSULB for 36 years and was most recently a Program Director in the Athletic Traning Program and a faculty member Base Los Angeles Long Beach Base Miami Beach Base National Capital Region Base New Orleans.
