Weavering Capital (UK) Ltd founder Magnus Peterson has been sentenced to 13 years in prison after he was found guilty of fraud by a London court this week. This marks one of the longest sentences handed down for a high-profile fraud in the UK in recent times. In March 2009, Weavering went into liquidation in the Cayman Islands following the discovery that its investment manager and controlling mind, Magnus Peterson (Peterson), had been concealing heavy losses with fictitious interest rate swaps, thereby fraudulently inflating Weavering's NAV. The liquidators of Weavering launched a civil case against Peterson and other Weavering staff last year after the UK’s Serious Fraud Office dropped its probe into the 2009 collapse. The case centred on more than $600 million of interest rate swap agreements between the Weavering’s Macro fund and a British Virgin Islands company called Weavering Capital Fund (WCF), which was related to Weavering.
